Kuhn Family

I’ve been photographing this family for years now, and there is something incredibly special about watching a family grow through my lens. I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the arrival of Luca, Belly, and Lucy and seeing the beautiful love that Lisa and Jerry have created together. Every year, I get another little glimpse into their lives—and every year, I’m reminded just how quickly these seasons of childhood pass.

One of my favorite parts of photographing a family year after year is seeing how much the children change. Their faces change, their interests change, and their little personalities become more and more defined. What never changes is the connection between them. It’s such a gift to be invited back into their lives and to document these little pieces of their story as they unfold.

This year, we met at a beautiful sunflower field on a spectacular warm summer evening. The sunflowers seemed to stretch endlessly around us, creating the most beautiful backdrop for this growing family. Rather than rushing from one pose to the next, we wandered through the field together, exploring and finding all of the little pockets of light and the best spots among the flowers.

There was plenty of movement, plenty of laughter, and plenty of those in-between moments that I love so much. The kids could explore the field while we captured their personalities as they naturally came through. And, of course, we made time for those sweet family portraits that will become part of their family history.

Looking back at these images, I love seeing not just a beautiful family in a sunflower field, but a snapshot of who they are right now. The way the children interact with one another, the way Lisa and Jerry look at their kids, and all of the little expressions and moments in between tell a much bigger story.

It is an honor to keep photographing this family as the years go by. Family photography, to me, is about so much more than creating a beautiful picture. It’s about preserving the feeling of a particular season of life—the tiny hands, the personalities, the laughter, the closeness, and the way a family looks together before everyone grows just a little bit more.

I can’t wait to see what another year brings for this beautiful family.
